Arthur has always been a strong retail location. About equal distance from the major shopping centers of Champaign, Decatur and Mattoon, Arthur has attracted shoppers for exceptional clothing, building materials, hardware, furniture and cabinets, and farm and animal supplies. And, with the large surrounding Amish population providing numerous small “country shops” to satisfy their own need for shopping within “Buggy Travel Distances,” there are many unique stores to visit in Arthur and the immediate area.
Arthur shops are not totally dependent on Arthur residents for business. Regular customers shop the Arthur area from as far away as Chicago and St Louis, with many people visiting Arthur repeatedly from Champaign, Decatur, Bloomington, Springfield, Mattoon Effingham and Terre Haute.
