The Arthur Library was established in 1900 when the population of the town was 850. Forty Arthur residents donated $10.00 each to buy books for the use of the residents of Arthur. The books were placed in Homrighouse’s Jewelry Store. In 1907 the residents voted to build a library on Vine Street. Construction was completed the following year. Improvements were made in 1953 and an addition built in 1973. Having out-grown the facility, an effort began in 1989 to construct a new building. With the aid of a $208,000 state construction grant, a new building was completed in 1991. The new facility has approximately 5,000 square feet, is completely handicapped accessible, and has allowances for expanding services both now and in the future.

Library Policies
Books
Books can be checked out for 21 days at a time, with one renewal period of 21 days. A fine will be charged for each book that is returned late. We also have a good collection of Large Print books. We have a rotating Large Print Collection that stays here for 3 months that offers an even greater number of large print books for our patrons. Our library also offers a large selection of Inspirational books.
Videos and DVDs
Videos and DVDs can be checked out for 7 days with no renewal. We limit the number of videos each family can check out to 5. There is a fine for each video returned late. We have a few instructional videos which are checked out for three weeks with a fine per day. We also have a rotating video collection that stays here for 30 days that allows us to offer an even greater number of videos. Those videos can only be checked out for 3 days with no renewals and the fine per day when returned late.
Magazines
Magazines can be checked out for three weeks. The newest issue of a
magazine must remain in the library for browsing.
Renewals
Renewals can be made in person, over the internet, and by phone.
Getting a Library
Card
If you are interested in having a library card, please come in and
request one. If you live in the Arthur Public School District,
you would be able to have a card at no cost. If you live
outside the District, there would be a fee.
Faxes Our library offers faxing services. . Our fax number is 217-543-4081.
Copies The library offers photocopying services. The cost of an 8 ½ x 11 or 8 ½ x 17 black and white copy is per copy. The cost of an 11 x 17 black and white copy is per copy. The cost of an 8 ½ x11 color copy is per copy.

The library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9
am until 8 pm. We are open on Friday and Saturday from 9 am
until 5 pm. We are closed on Sunday and the following
holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th. of July, Labor
Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. We
will also close at 5 pm on Thanksgiving Eve and New Year’s Eve.
